Simultaneous and Global Optimizations of LNG Fueled Hybrid Electric Ship for Substantial Fuel Cost, CO2 and Methane Emission Reduction

Natural gas (NG) is a promising low-carbon fuel to replace diesel for heavy-duty marine propulsion with prominent cost and carbon dioxide equivalent (CDE) emissions reduction potential. However, using NG in compression ignition (CI) engines presents several inherent drawbacks. This research addresses the central issue of an NG-diesel CI engine increased methane emissions, resulting minor CDE emission reduction. The hydrocarbon (HC), monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) are minimized addition consumption as current practice. simultaneous optimizations powertrain component sizes NG-engine hybrid electric control introduced minimize globally. top-level sizing bottom-level optimal power energy management conducted simultaneously achieve global optimization balanced reductions. new method reduced by about 75 percent well-to-wake 40 over traditional diesel-mechanical test ferry running under actual operation profile. opened path design engine-powered system.
